I was never great at writing reviews so I'm not too surprised, but Light for the Lost Boy is such a phenomenal CD with tons of heart and soul it deserves better than I can do. But I'll do my best in my own way and throw convention out the window.
One of the things I love about Andrew's music is his story telling. While Light for the Lost Boy might not technically be a concept album, there is a thread that winds through the songs. That is the story of a lost boy whose innocence has been shattered. This Lost Boy shows up throughout the CD, even when Andrew's singing to, and with, his daughter.
For me, this resonates deep within my heart. That Lost Boy lives within me and has been roaming around for more years that he should. I've also seen that Boy in many others. Losing our innocence is a fact of life, but sometimes it can be gone too soon.
Family is incredibly important to Andrew and he takes inspiration from them and shares that with us. The first song, "Come Back Soon", is partly inspired by his son witnessing the family dog killing a baby rabbit during the flood in 2011. His son's loss of innocence that day shook him.
"The Voice of Jesus" is a song Andrew wrote for his daughter and she sings backing vocals on it too. Having a daughter just about Skye's age, this is one of those songs that hit me right in the heart. It's pretty much what I would say to my baby girl. That Lost Boy makes his way here too.
"You'll Find Your Way" is written to his youngest son and is filled with truth and hope. It's something I've seen in my life and hope I can tell my son with the eloquence Andrew has done.
Then there are songs like "The Ballad of Jody Baxter" inspired by the classic novel The Yearling. There's been so much talk of that book lately I bought it from the Rabbit Room. I haven't had the chance to read it yet. but look forward to it when I can.
"The Cornerstone" is one of the most different songs on the CD with a rockin' edge and some cool effects on Andrew's voice. It's about the mystery of Christ. No matter how much we think we understand God, we are wrong.
From beginning to end Light for the Lost Boy is plain amazing. Tons of heart and honesty.
Andrew is offering a deluxe edition. This comes with a CD of all the songs in demo form. There is also a booklet included taking the reader behind the scenes of how this album came together. It is so worth the extra money. Andrew is a great writer and reading the stories of how the songs came together is inspiring.
